Travelling with animals

Conditions for transporting pets (PETC) and assistance dogs (SVAN) in the passenger cabin or in the hold (AVIH) for Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum flights.

In most countries, the entry of animals is strictly regulated by the health authorities. These are the requirements and documentation, as well as the exceptional cases and limitations per country. 

 

For more information, we recommend consulting the IATA Travel Trade website or contacting the embassy or consulate of the destination country.

Since the type of aircraft limits the number of carriers, at the passenger's request and with the prior authorisation of the reservations, the carriage of animals in the cabin or hold will be accepted, provided that certain conditions are met:

1. Pets (PETC)

The following will be accepted as PETCs in the cabin:

• Dogs (excluding potentially dangerous breeds),  including brachycephalic

 

• Cats, including brachycephalic


 Birds (except birds of prey)

 

• Fish

 

• Aquarium turtles

• Up to 8kg in weight, including carrier

Will not be accepted as PETC:

Animals unaccompanied by their owners or authorised representatives.

 

• Commercial shipments of pets or shipments considered as commercial.

• Protected species in danger of extinction.

 

• Laboratory animals / Pre-weaned animals / Pregnant animals.

Booking procedure

No animal may be transported without prior authorisation. And travel will not be authorised until all journeys have been confirmed.

PETC booking procedure

An SSR PETC element with the request must be added in the PNR including the animal's weight and  breed.   The request will be assigned to the passenger and the segment.

To request PETC in this case, the request must be made within the booking specifically using any of the following formats:

2. Assistance dogs (SVAN)

Assistance dogs will be accepted as SVANs in the cabin:

• Dogs individually trained by a recognised training centre to perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability or other assimilated medical condition, which it accompanies and is permanently attached to.

Animals will not be accepted as SVANs:

• Animals unaccompanied by their owners or authorised representatives.

 Commercial shipments of pets or shipments considered as commercial.

• Protected endangered species.

• Laboratory animals / Pre-weaned animals / Pregnant animals.

Booking procedure

To avoid any inconvenience, transport must be requested at the time of ticket purchase, preferably 48 hours prior to flight departure. See here for the requirements for travelling with an assistance dog to different countries. 

 

When accompanying visually impaired, hearing impaired or instructors, an SSR SVAN element including the weight and breed of the animal must be included in the PNR.

 

Travelling with animals

 The request shall always be assigned to the passenger and segment.


• The request shall be immediate, and automatically confirmed by the system.

• Valid on IB flights, operated by Iberia, Iberia Express or Air Nostrum and booked with Iberia code.

3. Pets in the hold (AVIH)

Pets will be accepted as AVIH in the hold from the passenger terminal:

• Dogs and cats (excluding brachycephalic and breeds considered dangerous)*.

Booking procedure

No animal may be carried without prior authorisation. And travel will not be authorised until all journeys have been confirmed.

Mandatory Booking procedure for AVIH (animal in hold)

• An SSR AVIH element shall be included in the PNR with the request, indicating the breed of the animal, the weight and the dimensions of the cage.


• An OSI shall also be added (provided the AVIH is for cats/dogs) indicating that the customer has been advised of the regulations affecting brachycephalic animals

• It will always be assigned to the segment and the passenger.

Note: AVIH service from/to LHR is not offered. Although the system confirms it, they cannot be admitted to the flight due to airport infrastructure limitations.

 

Due to the mandatory disinfection required by the Egyptian health authorities, the transport of live animals in the hold (AVIH) is not permitted on flights to Cairo operated by Iberia Express.

 

The AVIH service  to/from Boston (BOS), Washington (WAS), Recife (REC) and Fortaleza (FOR) is not offeredEven if confirmed by the system, they cannot be admitted to the flight due to operational reasons.

Travelling with animals

If the customer is travelling with their pet from a non-Schengen country to Spain, please ensure that the destination airport appears on the list of airports authorised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment:

Passengers flying with pets (PET or AVIH) coming from third countries with final destination an airport without Customs, must go through Customs control in MADRID (first point of contact in Spanish territory - Regulation (EU) nº 576/2013 and Decision 2007/25/CE October 2017).

* NOTE: 


• Brachycephalic animals: animals with excessively short and flat snouts and proportionally very broad heads. For these animals, air transport poses a high risk of respiratory problems.

• Dogs: Affenpinscher, Boston Terrier, Boxer (all breeds), Bull Mastiff, Bulldog (all breeds), Cane Corsican, Pug (all breeds), Cavalier Spaniel, Chihuahua, Japanese Chin, Chow Chow, Dogue de Bordeaux, Griffon Bruxellois, Japanese Spaniel, King Charles Spaniel, Lhasa Apso, Maltese, Mastiff, Pekingese, Miniature Pinscher, Pit bull, Presa canario, St. Bernard, Shar Pei, Shih Tzu, English Dwarf Spaniel, Tibetan Spaniel, Yorkshire terrier. 

 Cats: Burmese, Himalayan, exotic shorthair, Persian.

• Dangerous breeds: Potentially dangerous dogs are those of robust constitution; those showing a markedly aggressive character and the following dogs and their crossbreeds:Doberman, Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffodshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, Akita Inu.
